What a voyage is for
Anyone can say it now. Someone has to have seen it.
The ship we are named after is not remembered for crossing an ocean. It is remembered for what came back — knowledge that had not existed, trade that had not been possible, a map that was suddenly larger. A voyage is only a voyage if the world is bigger afterwards.
Work is meant to do the same. Most of it leaves nothing. What you learned sits in a certificate nobody checks; what you were good at is an opinion in the head of a manager who has moved on. And a page about yourself proves nothing now, because everyone's page is perfect. So someone genuinely, demonstrably good sends two hundred applications into silence and begins to suspect the problem is her. It isn't. She has no witness.
Claims are free now; a mark somebody else made is not. Pinta is the Portuguese word for the kind of mark that does not wash out.
